World Animal Day Commemoration by SARP

The Society for Animal Rights Protection, SARP, Nigeria commemorated this year’s World Animal Day in grand style. Under the. global theme ‘ Forest and Livelihood, Sustaining People and Planet, a seminar was organised for hunters in Ibadan land on ‘ Best Hunting Practices: Panacea to Wild Animal Species Sustainability’. SARP considers hunters as critical stakeholders when issues of forest livelihoods are considered. We believe that if hunters would hunt with sustainability of Animals in the wild in mind, then, we can truly consider ourselves as people holding animal resources in trust for succeeding generations.

The Zonal Director of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency ( NESREA ) presented a keynote Address. The event was chaired by The Ekefa Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oloye Lekan Alabi. Other dignitaries in attendance included Chief Yemi Ogunyemi, the Baale Oluyole and Environs, Professor Olajumoke Morenikeji, Chairperson, Pangolin Conservation Guild, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Professor Abosede Omonona, Head of Department, Department of Wildlife and Ecotourism, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Hon. Segun Odebunmi, Chairman, House. Committee on Information, Ethics and National Orientation, The Conservator of National Park, Old Oyo National Park, and the Oluode of Ibadan land ably represented by the Balogun Oluode of Ibadan land.

Lectures were presented on three topics

1. The Endangered Animal Species in Nigeria

2. Laws Regulating Hunting and National Parks in Nigeria

3. Traditional Hunting Ethics aimed at Sustainability of Wild Animals

The attendance was very encouraging. The questions and answers segment crowned the program up. The objective of the program was achieved. We are on the road of progress already. The future is bright!
